HSIANG IU

has worked in both the private sector as well as the public sector. He first embarked on an architectural career with a private firm in 1987. As an Assistant Architect, he worked on a variety of small to medium sized projects, the most notable of which is the Chinese Swimming Club at Amber Road.

After obtaining his professional degree in 1990, he joined the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) as an Architect. During his service there, he worked on projects such as the interior design and refurbishment of the URA HQ and the Master Plan for the China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park.

In 1992 he was awarded the URA Overseas Post Graduate Scholarship. After completing a Masters at Columbia University in 1995, he returned to assume a leadership role in his Division where he headed all architectural design. This included three HDB Design & Build projects in Yishun, Jurong West and Woodlands, the Changi Point Ferry Terminal and the National Parks Board HQ Building at the Botanical Gardens. His other duties included writing the procedural manual for the architectural practice and project management of the Division, which later obtained ISO 9000 certification; and training young architects and planners on issues relating to design, conservation, architectural practice and project management.

He left for private practice in 1999 with a local architectural practice where he designed and managed a variety of projects such as the United Parcel Service Asia Pacific HQ and World Wide Logistic Centre; this encompassed the architectural, interior and spatial design of both their corporate HQ and warehouse.

Having worked as an Architect for more than ten years, he sought to widen his experience in other fields of management and spent the two years working with one of Singapore’s largest property developers. His primary responsibility was to audit and review the residential design proposals of architects, interior designers and landscape architects. This was not limited to project work but included tasks linked to the effectively marketing of the product, such as the setting up and furnishing of show flats.
